How Evan found belonging

“I didn’t know where to go where I’d be safe and seen.”

Evan A.'s story is rooted in joy, showing resilience, growth, and the importance of community. This story reflects the heart of joy, showing how neighbors show up, share resources, and build strength together. It’s about turning small moments into lasting change—one safe conversation, one brave choice, one open door at a time.

Why they reached out

Evan had been out as nonbinary for a few years, but after moving back home to help care for a parent, they were met with transphobia from neighbors, classmates, and even extended family. Their mental health began to spiral.

“I was trying to do the right thing by my family—but it felt like I disappeared in the process.”

How we helped

Lightkeepers offered crisis counseling referrals, invited Evan into an LGBTQIA+ community circle, and helped them create a plan to move into safer housing. They also worked with Evan’s parent to build understanding and support at home.
